- People and traditions are ‘delivered’—Jesus to the Romans by the chief priests (Mark 15:1), and tradition to Paul in the account of the last events in the life of Jesus (1 Cor. 11:23; 15:3). The purpose of Jesus' ministry, death, and resurrection is the deliverance of his people from distress, persecutions, and suffering (2 Tim. 1:10), from the power of sin (Rom. 7:18–25), and from the tyranny of death (Heb. 2:15). Jesus urges disciples to pray for deliverance from the power of the evil one (Matt. 6:13); and the idea of rescue (e.g. 2 Cor. 1:10; Gal. 1:4) is common.
